Overview
When using SitePoint, each sensor is assigned a role. One sensor acts as the base, while one or more sensors act as rovers. (Note: Any SitePoint can be a base or a rover.)
Understanding the difference between these roles is essential for achieving the best positioning accuracy in the field.
What is a Base?
The base is a SitePoint that stays in one location throughout your project. It establishes a reference position and provides correction data that helps the rover accurately determine its location. The base should be placed on a tripod with a clear view to the sky.
Entering Base Mode
To configure a SitePoint as a base:
Place the SitePoint in its desired location with a clear view of the sky.
Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn on your SitePoint.
Once the SitePoint lights turn on, press the power button twice in quick succession to enter Base Mode.
The SitePoint will automatically begin the auto survey process.
Flashing magenta lights indicate it is in Base Mode.
During the auto survey, the base determines its own position. Once the auto survey is complete, the base begins broadcasting correction data to connected rovers.
Important: Do not move the Base during your project. Moving the Base changes the reference position used by the Rover, which will affect the accuracy of your measurements and layout. If you need to relocate the Base, we'll cover the proper procedure later in this article.
Best Practices
Set up your base as soon as you arrive at the jobsite. Starting the auto survey early gives the SitePoint more time to establish its reference position before you begin working
Place the base where it has a clear view of the sky.
Mount it securely on a tripod or other stable surface.
Do not move the base while working within your project.
Keep the base powered on for the duration of your project.
If you need to relocate the base:
Exit the current project in the Kinsman app.
Move the SitePoint to its new location.
Place the SitePoint where it has a clear view of the sky and enter Base Mode by pressing the power button twice.
Allow the SitePoint to complete a new auto survey.
Return to your project and localize your control point before continuing work.
Important: Every time the base is moved you must localize your control point before resuming work. This ensures the rover is using the correct reference point and maintains accurate positioning. For more information on localizing your control point see “Setting a control point”
What is a Rover?
A rover is the SitePoint you use throughout the jobsite. It receives correction data from the base and uses that information to determine its precise location, allowing you to perform accurate layout and measurement tasks.
Depending on your workflow, the rover can be:
Mounted on a survey pole for handheld field operations.
Mounted to a machine for machine guidance. (Coming soon.)
How They Work Together
Think of the base and rover as a team.
The base stays in one place and continuously measures satellite signals.
The rover moves around the jobsite, using the corrections provided by the base to improve positioning accuracy.
Without a properly positioned base, the rover cannot achieve its highest level of accuracy.

For the best performance:
Set up the base before beginning work.
Place the base where it has an unobstructed view of the sky.
Do not move the base after setup.
Ensure both the base and rover have sufficient battery life before starting.
Verify that the rover has connected to the base before beginning work.
Helpful Tip
If you need to relocate your base during a project, complete your current work first. Moving the base changes the reference point used by the rover and may require starting a new setup.
